Where do Principal, Staff, Lead, and Senior UX/ Product/ UX UI Designers go from here?
I recently read a post on this topic and commented on it. This prompted me to reflect on my own career. Over the past decade, I have progressed from Digital Designer to UX Engineer to Product Experience & Adoption Strategist.
Initially, I specialised in building digital experiences as a designer. Subsequently, I deepened my understanding of product thinking, working at the intersection of UX, technology, learning experience, and user adoption. During my tenure as a UX Software Engineer, I realised that great products are not solely about aesthetically pleasing interfaces but about solving real human problems and facilitating successful change adoption. After over a decade of experience in design and technology, my career took an unexpected turn four years ago.
While it is often described as a “layoff”, my experience was more nuanced. It was not merely a situation of job loss but a conscious decision to step away and take ownership of my next chapter. I chose to explore, learn, rebuild, and create new opportunities through freelancing, product experiments, and continuous learning.
This transition imparted a significant career lesson: Your title may change, but your value remains.
During this period, I expanded my skills in:
- Product Experience Strategy
- UX Research & Design
- Customer Journey Mapping
- Product Adoption & Activation
- Learning Experience Design
- AI-powered design workflows
- Human-centred AI experiences
I also challenged myself to create meaningful projects, publish knowledge, and share experiences with others undergoing career transitions.
One of my personal projects was writing my book:
📘“How to Come Out of a Layoff: A Practical Guide to Career Recovery, Reinvention and Growth”
A guide created from my own experiences and learnings to help others navigate uncertainty, rebuild confidence, and design their next career chapter. The Book is available on
As we enter the Agentic AI era, I believe the role of senior designers is evolving.
We are moving from builders to decision-makers.
AI can help us generate ideas, accelerate workflows, and analyse information. However, AI still requires human partners who can understand emotions, identify hidden pain points, connect experiences with business goals, and create solutions that feel genuinely human.
The future of UX is not Human vs AI.
It is Human + AI creating better experiences together.
For Principal, Staff, Lead, and Senior UX Designers, the opportunity ahead is to expand beyond screens and interfaces to become experience strategists, product thinkers, and leaders who drive adoption and growth.
My journey continues.
From Design → Experience → Adoption → Growth.
I am excited to see where this next chapter leads.
